Romeo and Juliet

Date

April 2026

Location

Athens, Ohio

This was my capstone design for my BFA at Ohio University. I got to work with MFA director candidate Castor Kent, and having worked on a theoretical version of "Richard III" with them, I knew it was going to be a non-traditional design. Inspired by a very early meeting, I landed on a reclaimnation of nature design for our blackbox theater, inspired by orange poppies and giant sequoias in California that Castor sent me early in the design phase. The cut stump implied the man-made disaster that preceded the world in which the play takes place, and it became a symbol for the family feud's impact on the individual family members. The orange poppies and hanging purple passion flowers refer to the dichotomy and isolation of the Capulets and Montagues.

Below you'll see show photos and some of my drafting and paint elevations.
This set incorporated a flower drop at the end of the show, mixing the orange and purple petals to cover the dead couple on stage to show how their spirits and families have come together. The video is at the end due to the images being in chronological order.
